New British passport – Everything you need to know

As everyone is aware, the United Kingdom left the European Union at the beginning of 2020. This was followed by an 11-month long transition period during which the UK was able to secure a Brexit deal.

Brexit has had major implications for British citizens in that free travel, work and study throughout Europe is no longer possible. Although you may travel to any European country on holiday and not require a visa, you will be restricted to a stay of no longer than 90 days.

In addition, a UK citizen wanting to work or study in Europe will now be required to obtain a visa and proof of return to the UK prior to travel.

The changes that Brexit has brought about has resulted in the UK’s iconic, burgundy-colored passport changing to a new, blue color which no longer contains the EU icon on the cover.

So, as a UK citizen how does the new British passport affect you? This article will explain everything you need to know!

Can I get a new blue UK passport?

HM Passport Office began issuing the new, blue British passports in mid-2020, meaning that any new passport now issued will be in the new colour and style.

Many British citizens are concerned about the fact that they still have the old style, burgundy passports and worry that they will not be allowed to travel on these documents.

The good news is that as long as your passport is valid and not older than 10 years, you will still be able to travel without a problem on your old, burgundy passport and it is still an approved and official travel document.

It is therefore not the best idea to apply for a new passport simply because you want it in the new color. Doing so is a waste of time and money and British Passport recommends only applying for a new passport when it will expire within the next 6 months.

Of course, if your passport has been lost, stolen or damaged, you may apply for a new British passport, as long as you have followed the process for lost, stolen or damaged passports (i.e. obtaining a police report, if needed, and informing your local British High Commission, embassy or consulate).

If your need to apply for a new UK passport (either by renewal or for the first time), once approved, you will be issued with a passport in the new blue color.

MyBritishPassport specializes in helping British citizens living abroad with UK passport renewals, first-time passport applications and applications for UK certificates.

How do I apply for a British passport from abroad?

Applying for a new British passport (whether for the first time or a renewal) is done entirely online.

This means that your application forms must be completed electronically and then digitally submitted to the passport office.

Physical paper passport photos are now no longer accepted and you will need to have digital photos taken.

Although everything is now done online, it is still important to ensure that your forms are completed accurately and fully and that your passport photos comply with the standards given by the passport office.

Any error in your application forms or passport photos could result in your application being denied.

British Passport can assist you with your passport application by ensuring that your forms are correct and that your photos are compliant.

Since you will need to send in your old, UK passport (if renewing), British Passport uses an approved courier service to ensure that your passport arrives at the passport office safely and in good time.

Once your application has been submitted to His Majesty’s Passport Office, you can expect a wait of around 3 to 4 weeks before your new passport arrives via DHL.
